Sebastiaan is a passionate lawyer and sparring partner in the field of corporate law and, within his broad advice and litigation practice, focuses on acquisitions, insolvency and recovery. He advises and assists companies in (international) transactions and extensive purchasing, selling and acquisition processes.

Sebastiaan is also a seasoned lawyer in ICT and Intellectual Property Law (trademarks, designs, copyright and know-how). He is frequently called upon when it comes to more complex IP issues and ICT-related processes and contracting processes. Besides his commitment, his clients call his entrepreneurial spirit, practical approach and creative solutions the success factors in their cooperation.

Sebastiaan keeps close track of technological developments and novelties and within his field of expertise, he pays special attention to privacy, data protection and smart cities. He advises and assists companies in drafting and implementing their privacy and compliance policies as well as internal protocols, often also from an international perspective. He is also frequently asked to think along with the privacy and corporate-law side of the structuring and restructuring of an organisation. Within our firm, Sebastiaan is closely involved in the development of the various Marxman privacy scans (link to ‘area of operation’ IP and ICT).

In the field of smart cities, Sebastiaan helps players formulate and implement their smart city strategy. Partly because of his role in a variety of smart city projects, Marxman Advocaten bears the international designation ‘Smart Cities Law Firm’. Sebastiaan is a board member of the international SCLF platform (link), an international partnership of law firms in the field of smart cities. Furthermore, Sebastiaan is closely involved in the project ‘Designing for Controversies in Responsible Smart Cities’ as a legal adviser. This research into smart cities is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and carried out by a consortium of various social and commercial partners, including the University of Twente and the municipality of Amersfoort.

Sebastiaan is also involved in the supervision and coordination of (legal) proceedings before various judicial authorities and arbitration bodies such as NAI, ICC and SGOA.

‘As a partner in business, we map out the legal challenges and opportunities at an early stage for every project and every case. Only then can you come up with an appropriate approach to a case or issue. In order to be able to fulfil the role of legal partner optimally, you need to know exactly what is important for your client. Therefore, I always opt for a proactive, practical approach and for short lines of communication with the client. It gives me the opportunity to think along and, above all, to come up with creative solutions at an early stage of how things can be done. That is where the added value lies.’

Sebastiaan provides knowledge sessions and guest lectures on, among other things, privacy legislation and company-law news. He is a member of the board of Financieel Café Midden-Nederland, a network with national coverage and a regional set-up for financial managers with final responsibility within companies. Sebastiaan is also involved in Round Table 8 Amersfoort, the department of the service club Nederlandsche Tafelronde in Amersfoort. In 2010 he completed the specialisation course in Company and Corporate Law at Grotius Academy. Sebastiaan is a member of the Netherlands Association for Privacy Law.
